Though our legs and knees were very sore from the expedition up the volcano, we decided to spend our final day in Rwanda on our feet, trekking again through Volcans, visiting the Golden Monkeys. The hike was thankfully more of a nature walk, and the visit with the crazy monkeys was unforgettable. We spent some time with probably 80 of the 120 of the monkeys in the area. They rolled around and wrestled on the ground, swung from vines, and leaped from bent branch. With this final visit in the park, we packed up and headed north for the border, closing our Rwandan chapter and aiming to start the week of relaxing, hiking and safari in Uganda.
We woke up early to another clear day with beautiful morning light
As well as amazing crisp views of the surrounding volcanoes
And went for a short but strenuous jungle jaunt
Deep in the thick jungle of Volcans
We found a huge amount of cute and playful monkeys
Bounding from tree to tree and chowing down
A nice reflective moment for this one
Kristin was about three feet away from this well groomed male
Somebodys got a case of the munchies
You can't tell here, but there are golden monkeys just everywhere
We were told they get less active around mid-day after they feed – think this little guy is about to take his daily siesta
Some pretty stunning views through the bamboo forest
This photogenic guy sat and posed for me for five minutes or so – a stark difference from many of the other frenetic monkeys
A handful of the young ones ones would swing from the vines and wrestle on the jungle floor
The discerning monkey still chowing
And of course there were beautiful children to welcome us back to the village
